Nobody is surprised by this. People who grew up around older appliances just sort of expect them to keep going. The surprise comes later — when they buy something new and discover it won't make it to its tenth birthday.
This isn't a small thing. The shift from appliances built to last a lifetime to appliances built to be replaced is one of the most consequential — and least discussed — changes in American consumer life over the past fifty years.
When They Made Things to Stay
Manufacturing philosophy in the postwar United States operated on a relatively simple premise: build it well, and people will trust your brand. Maytag ran one of the most famous advertising campaigns in television history around the idea that their repairman had nothing to do. It was funny because it was basically true. A washer or dryer built in the 1950s or 1960s used heavy-gauge steel, simple mechanical components, and almost no electronics. There wasn't much to break, and what did break was fixable by anyone with a basic tool set.
Consumer Reports data from the mid-20th century routinely showed appliance lifespans of 20 to 30 years for major brands. Refrigerators from that era had an average expected lifespan of 25 years. Washing machines lasted 18 to 20. Dishwashers, once they became common, were expected to run for 15 years without major intervention.
Repair was not only possible — it was the default response to something breaking. Your local appliance repair shop could order the part, fix the machine, and send you home the same day for a fraction of what a new unit would cost. The economics made sense. The repairman had steady work. The manufacturer sold fewer units but commanded loyalty. The consumer kept their money.
The Slow Arrival of the Replacement Cycle
The concept of planned obsolescence — designing products with intentionally limited lifespans — didn't begin with smartphones. It has roots going back to the 1920s, when General Motors began releasing annual model updates for its cars to make previous years feel outdated. But it took decades for the philosophy to fully migrate into household appliances.
By the 1980s and especially the 1990s, something started to shift. Manufacturers discovered that incorporating circuit boards and electronic controls into appliances made them feel more modern and allowed for more features. A comparable modern refrigerator costs $1,200 to $2,500 and will likely need replacement in 12 to 15 years. Manufacturers know exactly how long their units are likely to run — and they've structured their guarantees accordingly. Several states have passed or are considering Right to Repair legislation, and the Biden administration made gestures toward supporting the movement at the federal level. Appliance manufacturers have largely opposed these efforts, arguing that proprietary systems protect safety and intellectual property. Critics point out that the real protection is market share.
In the meantime, a small but passionate community of appliance restorers has emerged — people who seek out vintage washers, dryers, and refrigerators, restore them, and use them for decades. They're not just hobbyists. They're making a quiet economic argument: the old stuff, properly maintained, is still the better deal.
What Changed, and Who Benefits
The honest answer to who benefits from shorter appliance lifespans is not the consumer. It's the manufacturer, who sells more units. It's the retailer, who moves more product. It's the extended warranty industry, which collects premiums on machines that will predictably fail.
